Those figures are very impressive! I get about 18-20 on a similar run in my 2.4 4wd. Maybe 14 around town at best. Was hoping for 17 around town but not too far short so can't complain too much
The 4wd is probally the reason me dads is the 2wd 2.4 model the 1978 Rover SD1 I had came with a 3speed auto linked to a 3.5ltr V8 did around 19mpg in town and 30-35 on a run topped out at 140mph lol

i think 35-40 from a 2.4 sound to good to be true, are you sure you worked it out right or is that what commerfords told you it will do.sorry if i sound blunt but the petrol drivers on here get less mpg than the diesel drivers and a diesel driver would struggle to get 35-40mpg from there bus. i've heard all sorts of stories from people trying to sell there buses saying there car does this to the gallon knowing it does nowhere near what they claim.
Well Its more a gues then anything else we brimmed the tank in at the fuel station by preston park then went to Redcar then from redcar to osmotherly via Yarm and back to eaglescliffe on just under a quarter of a tank so i'd guess 30-35 mpg could be wrong though but either way its pretty decent for a 2.4 on a 4speed auto

the way i work mine out is from empty i put fuel in.then work out how many gallons it is and then divide the milage covered by the gallons.
so 20quid= 14.18 liters(diesel)
14.18 liters divided by 4.54 = 3.12 gallons divided by my miles covered.
